Michelle Boerio, Charcoal Play

Mixed media on stretched canvas, 30” x 40”

The artist on the piece: “Is this tracks in the winter snow or clouds and fog in the morning? I love the ambiguous nature of abstract painting. This piece explores that ambiguity in a painting that used neither paint nor brushes. In this painting, I used charcoal, wood fibers, gesso, and my hands to make marks on the canvas.

"Wild places connect us to the complex web of life beyond humanity. In places like outer space and the deep ocean, humanity is just starting to learn how much we don’t yet know. Those natural mysteries, big and small, leave a fertile space for imagination. From the deep ocean to distant galaxies to local Ohio wildlife, I make art to spark curiosity and connection with the natural world. My paintings explore both everyday wonders and big mysteries of the universe. While painting, I build layers of translucent color and paper fragments with oils, watercolors, acrylics, collage, and combinations of all of the above.” - Michelle Boerio
