Zach Van Horn, Before and Again
acrylic on paper on wood panel, 40” x 40”
Zach references old photographs and compares them to his memories of events through a process of dissecting each section. He’s found that just like photographs can fade and photographic files can be corrupted, so can our memories shift over time.
His process pieces together memories through a series of interrogations. First, the photograph is painted, then cut apart in wavelike patterns, then reassembled as the elements are woven back together. The result is an abstract vision that moves in and out of focus, just like our memories.
